Nonprofits and voter engagement

As nonprofits, we have a unique opportunity and obligation to help our communities have a say in the policy decisions that shape their daily lives. With our nonpartisan status, we can reach people in ways political groups can’t, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard, no matter their background or beliefs. Together, we can break down barriers to make sure our neighbors have the access and support they need to show up at the polls. It’s about stepping up, because when our neighbors vote, our whole community wins.

How can nonprofits support the upcoming election?

  • Never assume that someone is eligible to vote or that they are already registered. Check out MCN’s Who can vote in Minnesota?
  • Integrate accessible information about voter registration and voting rights into your everyday programs
  • Inform constituents about primary elections, voting absentee, and early voting. Not sure about what you can or can’t say as a nonprofit? Consider these guiding questions in your decision-making
  • Match your messages to the communities you work with
  • Center historically disenfranchised communities – Black, Indigenous, and people of color are some of the communities that have historically experienced the highest barriers to voting because of the lack of language access, funding for elections, reduced voting hours, and voter ID requirements. Nonprofits can work to eliminate barriers for communities through advocacy and through informing voters of their rights.

Additionally, nonprofits can inform voters why voting is a powerful way to shape the communities they live in.
